The game is controlled by a caller, whose job it is to call out the numbers and approve the winning bankrolls. As each number is called out, players check to see if the number is on their cards. If it does, the number on the plate is marked with a cover plate. When all the numbers required to win a prize have been covered, the player shouts "BANKO" to attract the caller's attention.
